Wedding Dress Update

JCrew-Taryn-Wedding-Dress-Gown

Just a little follow-up on last week’s poll.  So many people voted and gave great advice —I was so very touched, honestly, thank you!!!  I have decided to go with the Taryn gown for practical reasons.  I tried on the Whitney in New York and it was an inch or two short (it was a size 6 and I’m 5′ 8″—that’s not that tall??) and I found out yesterday that sadly, J.Crew no longer offers custom lengths.  They did offer to send extra fabric, but that would require a seamstress taking the dress apart and adding layers and I just don’t want to deal with it.  So, the Taryn (above) is supposedly an inch longer and I’m going to give it a go.  J.Crew allows you to return dresses for a full refund within 60 days (they were SO helpful on the phone) so fingers crossed!  Also, I think the simplicity of the Taryn will make for fun accessorizing, don’t you?  I’m trying to think positive!  Any ideas on hair/jewlery???

XO Katie

P.S. Thanks for holding my hand through this process, I hope I’m not boring you to tears.  My mom and girlfriends are hundreds of miles away so my readers have become such a wonderful support group.  LOVE you ladies so much : )

Ooo yay! That was my favorite dress! As far as hair goes, I tend toward the romantic side of things – an upswept hairdo with cascading curls or maybe the opposite: a neat chignon. Wear you hair in a way that reflects your style and in a way that you will be comfortable. I think for jewelry you could go simple with a small diamond pendant and matching earrings or a string of pearls. You could go in a different direction and be really eclectic with layers of vintage necklaces (rhinstones and big beads and metal flowers)! Ah the choices! Can’t wait to hear more about your plans!

  2. Lauren says:

You are going to be such a gorgeous bride!!!

  3. Ahhh Emily you have me so excited!!! Part of me wants to have very classic accessories as you suggested and the other parts wants to find a really fantastic statement necklace and break all the rules. We’ll see… Oh and a the romantic hairstyle sounds lovely. I’m so excited to get all done up–so much fun! XO

Lauren — Thank you love! You’re too sweet. XOXO

  4. Brooke says:

    OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

You are going to be the most stunning bride! I can picture it now. In fact I am crying at work.

    LOVE YOU!

  5. Kate says:

LOVE it! Good choice. As for hair, I would think down or half up with lots of loose curls would be beautiful. Maybe too hot though? If so then definitely something loose – more casual and comfortable to fit the dress and the whole vibe of the wedding from what I can tell! Congrats again!

  6. Brookie — You always make me smile. I’m definitely having one of these “Oh my Lord, I’m getting Married?!?!” moments. I’m just a little kid…what am I doing?? AHHHH. XOXO

Kate — I totally agree. I definitely want something loose and a little wild even. I’m so far from that perfectly coiffed, manicured girl and wouldn’t feel like myself with my hair being overly styled. Great minds think alike! XO

  7. SO exciting! what a beautiful dress. Can’t wait to see pictures!!
    XOXO

  8. Staley Mc says:

Katie that is so gorgeous! I can’t wait to see all the other wedding details!

  9. Christina says:

That dress so beautiful!! I love how simple it is. That’s the type of dress I would like to wear at my wedding. (: I think a bun with a flower in your hair would look great with that style.

  10. Gorgeous! This was my favorite of the two anyway. And practical choice or not, I think years from now when you look back at your photos, you’ll still love this dress. Hair – something soft, I think. Jewelry – you can go either way – simple and classic, or a single statement piece. You cannot go wrong either way, but you MUST share. We need details.
You are going to be a lovely, gorgeous, amazing Neo-Trad bride.
    xoxo, Stephanie

  11. Jocy says:

That’s beautiful, Katie. Simple and ethereal.

  12. Natalie says:

Kate I think this dress is J.Crew’s crown jewel of the moment! I had admired it in black a while back, but it wasn’t until you posted the picture of it in the greenish hue on the model the other day that I paid close attention to the actual fit and how stunning it really looks on. It’s so easy breezy, just dreamy, you’ll float away in it! XO

  13. Awww thank you ladies. I am so excited for the dress to arrive so I can try it on. I have such high hopes! You are all too sweet. XOXO

  15. La Feem says:

    Hi Katie,

I have a vintage jewelry line with lots of great stuff for brides, will be posting some new stuff soon…..lafeem.etsy.com. Also Anthropology has some incredible necklaces….good luck!

  16. La Feem — Oh can’t wait to check it out! Thanks for the tip! XO

  17. Marija says:

BORING?! I think this is so fun! But I am the wrong person to ask for jewelry help. I have such a weakness for accessories you’re going to get more choices than you bargained for ;)

You could totally change up your jewelry and hair between the ceremony and reception. How fun would THAT be?!

    Marija

  18. Chelsea says:

My sister is writing a guest post on weddings for me that should be going up tomorrow and is full of hair accessory ideas (she’s so cute!). You should def. check it out.
PS- I love catching up on your life this way!

  19. Amanda says:

I think I was outnumbered last week when you asked, so I didn’t say anything, but that was secretly my favorite!! :) You will be STUNNING! I already can’t wait to see pics! XOXO

  20. Haydee says:

Perfect! Honestly both were great choices, so you really couldn’t go wrong. How exciting, you got the hardest part done and out of the way. Now you can really focus on the little fun things. Accessories? I’m not sure, but I am picturing a really pretty, colorful flower in your hair. Especially with such a great canvas as the dress.

  21. Jannah says:

Kate, that is absolutely stunning!!! My vote is definitely with a colored statement necklace! You are going to look so chic!

  22. meg says:

beautiful choice– so, so lovely! i wore Erin Cole organza flowers in my hair and they were honestly my favorite accessory, will forever be a great keepsake and very unique. Maybe check her stuff out if you are looking to have fun adding to your already beautiful look. Good luck and can’t wait to see what you do with it!

  23. Meg — Googling Erin Cole this very second, thanks for the suggestion!! XO

  24. So pretty!! You will look gorgeous no matter what. Maybe a big pearl necklace to go with it? Or a pretty hairpiece? I’m loving La Boheme on etsy right now. I just bought my wedding dress this past weekend in Boston!! I’m so excited ! :)

And I just read the other comments – I always picture all white for a wedding, but color would be such a fun touch! Especially for a more casual wedding. Just wear whatever makes you feel best and the most like you, right?! We sweat the details too much. xo

  25. Colleen — I grew up with Lauren of Lo Boheme!!! Small world, right? She is the most beautiful, stylish girl you’ve ever seen. My older brother dated her in elementary school (awwww…) and I was best friends with her equally stylish little sister growing up. Anywho, her pieces would be a GREAT option for my big day, thanks for reminding me! XOXO Katie

  26. Oh my gosh, NO WAY! That is so cool! What a fun connection! Thanks for the comment. xo

  27. You’ll look fabulous! Great canvas. Can’t wait to see how you do it up!

  28. I loved this dress…I think some messy romantic braids would be lovely…

  31. mary says:

I loved the Taryn when you had it up in seafoam, and almost suggested that it would get more votes if you put it up in ivory… What a lovely choice for you! Keep us abreast of your spring/summer plans! I am hoping we will see you before then…

  32. kiri says:

here is my $.02 on accesserizing- I know this is going to throw you off right out of the gate-I promise i do not watch regularly- ok saw an episode of All My Children couldn’t tell you the date as it was on HuLu- anyway Greenly was getting married to David ?? – she had on a strapless gown w/ 2 strands of opera length pearls and a long double wrapped (one close on the neck ) strand of silver thin chain pearl chain pearl necklace w/ her hair pulled up- she looked FAB! I sure you could find a shot of her.

  33. Piper says:

Oh the dress is so gorgeous! My best friend got married last year and she wore a simple white dress with this gorgeous necklace – was definitely different and made it so beautiful. I can’t wait to see what you end up going with – any way you choose, it’s going to be lovely!!

  34. Sarah Esther says:

yaya!!! i can’t wait to see what it looks like!

  35. Brandi says:

Congrats on your dress choice! It’s beautiful. As for hair…hmm…are you going to have a veil? Frankly, what I want is one of these pieces: http://www.jenniferbehr.com/index.php
    I think you’ll love those.

  36. Lacquered Life — Those pearls are stunning!!! Thanks for the tip! xo

Mary — I think we’ve picked a date, I owe you an email!

Brandi — It’s so lovely!! You have such good taste my dear, but we already knew that : ) xo

  37. Kim Vinton says:

ok, so i’m not sure that we have the same taste, but i am getting married in june and doing the same thing with a simple dress and fun accessories. if you are wanting to go non-traditional i am personally getting a fun headpiece/possibly necklace or bracelet from jenny packham or johanna johnson in the bridal section. also a good place for fun necklaces is elva fields, or i make some myself. hope this helps and you will be stunning! yayy! http://www.jennypackham.com/

  38. Adriana says:

I can’t wait to actually see you in it! And I’m glad you chose the Taryn :D
