Cutting the Cupcake
April 9, 2010I definitely want cupcakes at the wedding (I have a minor addiction) and am having fun finding possible designs. I’d like something simple and sweet, perhaps just a swirl with a floral accent or two. Though I haven’t nailed down the color palette I’m leaning towards coral and blush pinks with a dash or orange to spice things up. Above are some ideas, any thoughts?

Oh I did cupcakes at my wedding too (I have a serious hatred of fondant – pretty to look at but awful to eat)! So much fun, everyone loved it. What we did was at the very top of the cupcake “tower” we had a little cake – sort of like the top tier of a traditional cake and that’s what we cut. Since my colors were green and chocolate brown I had them frosted with green or chocolate frosting and had some yellow cake and some chocolate cake. I kept it simple and that’s best with cupcakes, they are fun all on their own. The first picture makes me swoon! Yay! Can’t wait to see what you decide!

wow, girl, i stared at that first photo for a good 5 minutes I love it!! and I love the whole idea of cupcakes at your wedding, do it do it!!
-
Coral is my favorite color, so you have my vote! Mmm these pictures are making me hungry! I am off to NYC for the weekend so I will definitely have to stop by Magnolia Bakery for a treat!
-
love the last choice….you can choose 2-3 shades and it would look so lovely when tiered together. i am going with a brilliant coral and delicate blush pinks for my wedding too :)

I LOVE the idea of cupcakes for the wedding…so fun! All these look great – my faves are the cupcake tower (so beautiful!) and the 2nd photo. The colors are just gorgeous – i think coral would be so lovely against the blush pink. especially in a tower :)
I thought the cupcakes in this post were really lovely (I like the little flags in each one…but the orange and pink together – so pretty!)

Hi Katie! I love the color palette you are leaning towards! When is your wedding? Crumbs and Doilies is in the UK, but they have such a great photo gallery with tons of ideas for inspiration- even the cupcake towers y’all discussed with a cake on top! Happy Wedding planning!

All of those pics are so you – Coral it’s you ;) but in Jenny’s choice of Cupcakes with a top Cake to Cut. That moment might be symbolic but it’s important and too sweet to skip…
Something in this line but in your chosen colors and textures:

And cupcakes is a good idea (we don’t have cc tradition in my country) and that’s so bad because I would’ve enjoyed sending some souvenir cupcakes to people who couldn’t make to the wedding.

These look so lovely and delicious. I can’t wait to see what you end up going with. Usually at this point I would give an opinion, but ALL the photos you posted are just gorgeous.

My sister is doing cupcakes for her wedding. I can’t wait. I prefer cupcakes over cake any day!

Love it!! I made adorable sunflower ones for an outdoor summer wedding of a friend. And for a friend’s shower I did pink buttercream roses (similar to the ones at Cupcake Cafe but all pink) on white frosting. Love the top two the best. Check out flickr for a TON of ideas …
I swear, every detail you work out gets me even happier and more excited for you! mwah!!!! xoxo,

My favorite is the last choice, on the tower – the detailing is simple enough that you could have a whole bunch of them together. By the way , your choice on a color palette is sooo lovely!
-
i love the first two cupcakes, they are GORGEOUS and PERFECT!!! mmmmm i could really really go for one right now!! i definitely think you should have them at your wedding!
have a lovely weekend!

I love the idea of cupcakes and these images are beautiful. I like the idea of having a small wedding cake that is for show, but giving cupcakes instead of sheet cake to serve to guests. Did you think about the principles this morning?
-
Love the idea of cupcakes, LOVE the color palette. The ones at the tope are my favorite- simple, beautiful, and classic.
-
Oooh…The colours are spectacular.
I love the first two especially because they combine the fun of cupcakes with the special elements of a traditional wedding cake, tiers and pretty, pretty decoration. It’s a perfect marriage! And isn’t that just what you want at your wedding?
xo
HeatherPS: Now I REALLY want a cupcake. :)

omg this looks AWESOME!!!

Wow! Stunning post! Can’t wait to see what you pick out for your wedding :)
-
Katie–firstly, love, love, LOVE your blog, can’t even express. Secondly, pink, orange (and yellow) will probably be my wedding colors one day. Third, it’s so weird how cupcakes somehow taste way better than regular sliced cake, no?
Can’t wait to see what you end up choosing!

All of these are beautiful. Who doesn’t love cupcakes? They are a great way to add a little flair and whimsy to a wonderful occasion.
-
those are some great inspirations images! I have a sweet tooth for cupcakes too, although I don’t think I will have them at our wedding. but you never know, we still have time to decide that.
i’m sure you’ll also have a good time finding inspiration and figureing out how to display all these beautifull cupcakes!
-
The 2nd picture is my favorite, I think.
I know they’re super trendy and the “it” desert right now or whatever, but I still think cupcakes are the best. -
Pretty, pretty cupcakes!
-
My favorite color palette and I love the top photo the best! Yum!!
-
Good thing there aren’t many cupcake boutiques where I live or I would gain 100 pounds. Cupcakes at weddings are a great idea!
LOVE the first photo!
-
Cupcakes for a wedding is such a cute idea! I love all of these!
-
I think cupcakes are a great idea! They’re personal. The ideas are endless but the one’s you have here are really beautiful, especially the second image. They’ll make your guests so happy and excited to eat. So much better than a slice of cake, right?
-
the first one is amazingly beautiful!! the colors are to die for too! what time of year are you planning on getting married!?
xoxo

Fantastic pictures… yum!! I’m going to have to make-up some event to use these. Perhaps my 25th wedding anniversary?
-
I’m useless to chime in on this decision, since my favorite color is blue and blue icing just seems a bit strange. I think cupcakes are the way to go for your wedding though, and I would suggest keeping it light and delicious looking with pastels. Oh dear, I’m getting hungry just looking at all these lovely photos. Real icing is important (I’m glad when I discovered in one of the comments that I wasn’t the only one who seriously disliked fondant) and delicious cake. Taste is always paramount.
-
Oh, wow. Those all look incredible! I had cupcakes at my wedding- cupcakes and fruit tarts (for my non-cake eating Husband). It totally confused my grandma, but I loved it!
-
i absolutely adore the idea of using corals and blush pinks for your wedding color palette. this is sure to be a wedding for the ages!
-
Those are some gorgeous cupcakes!
-
I bet! i’ll pass any ideas and inspiration your way ;)
-
I am in love with these images. SO pretty and totally sweet. I am sucker for a pretty cupcake and I am so amazed by the things people can do with a pastry! I kept trying to convince my daughter to get cupcakes for her birthday but she wanted a cake. Darn 9 year olds ;)

I love the second photo for wedding cupcakes! I also love ones similar to the first… they Chrysathemums in Bloom and I saw them first at 17andbaking.com and then again at Martha Stewart. They’re beautiful! Here: http://17andbaking.com/2010/01/20/buttercream-in-bloom/
Good luck deciding! I love that you’re doing what your favorite is instead of a traditional wedding cake. We had a cake, but it was a big yummy chocolate cake. My fave.
