The Duke and Duchess
July 8, 2010The story of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor has always fascinated me. In this rare clip the two discuss how they first met. She’s a character isn’t she? What a wardrobe…what a life!

There was something about her that always rubbed me the wrong way. She was a rather “sharp” woman, I think, no softer angles. And I was never a fan of the way she pursued him, even in the presence of her husband. But the clip is a fascinating insight into their lives.

They were both so stylish!

Just finished “The Duchess of Windsor: The Secret Life” (where she basically is sleeping with every man she meets while with the duke, and they both simply adore Hitler) and am about to read another more sympathetic bio of her. I find he was the oddest personality of the two. Karma indeed.

I also have the dual autobiography of Thelma Furness and Gloria Vanderbuilt which I read first; it was interesting to get her take on how Wallis “stole” him from her. The thing that is probably most true no matter what you read, is that they almost certainly never consummated the relationship.

I make them up for my own artwork (I make fake portraits of people) so I like reading ones about real people, but also, I have a library that has been described as something belonging to a wealthy drag queen with a history degree. I’m not sure, but I think that was a compliment.

I just finished read William Shawcross’s biography of the Queen Mother, and it was incredibly interesting to her the perspective she and her husband took of Wallis and the Prince of Wales. Especially since the love affair really changed the path of their lives.

In the old black and white footage she looks quite like Coco Chanel, I think!

I just love the elocution along with the love.
