Thank you, Kelley!
January 5, 2011This morning I am honored to be part of Kelley Moore’s Ramblings interview series. If you’re interested, do check it out here! A big thanks goes out to Kelley for including me.
On another note, I have to have my photo taken for several things in the next two weeks and I thought I’d ask you ladies—any brilliant modeling advice? Special make-up that looks better in front of the camera? Clothes that look particularly flattering? A special way to smile? I get so nervous! Help!

As a former photographer, my first piece of advice is to talk to your photographer! We’re a quirky an opinionated bunch who never agree on anything!
But here’s the rest of my advice…
Makeup: Avoid SPF–the particles that reflect sunlight also reflect the flash and make your skin look ghostly. Keep makeup fresh and simple. I think cream products work best with a light dusting of translucent powder on your t-zone. Bare Essentials Mineral Veil and Besame’s powder are my faves. Gloss over lipstick, always. Wear a little more blush, eyeliner and mascara than usual so your features are defined (but not too much more!).
Clothes: go with something you feel good in that shows off your figure. Define your waist. Photographers I know are all over the place about color and pattern, but I’d do jewel tones close to your face, personally. It’s always a good idea, too, to layer to create some dimension and texture in your outfit.
As for the pose, do you know if you’ll be sitting or standing? If you want to smile, chat with the photographer about something happy or funny while they’re shooting so your smile is natural!
Also, I love this slideshow: http://www.instyle.com/instyle/package/general/photos/0,,20310636_20321641_20701500,00.html
Have fun!

I recommend using a primer so your makeup sits really evenly (I love Benefit “That Gal,” which is also soothing!
I’d be careful of mineral-based makeups because sometimes they can show up as thin white film over your skin. It’s best to use a liquid or powder foundation and set it with a loose powder. (I use Benefit “Hello Flawless’ because it makes you look airbrushed PRE-photoshop :) (I swear I’m not sponsored by Benefit!))

Is it too late to hire Flossie? She knows some great leaning-against-a-gate poses…

This might sound silly but you should practice poses and facial expressions in the mirror. That will help you better decide what works and what doesn’t.

Nude lipliner!!! It keeps lips from washing out at the edges but is subtle enough to look like your real lips.
Play your favorite music! No, blast it and just have fun!!! Can’t wait to see the results. -
ummm you need no advice..just look at your snaps!

Loved it:) Your grandmothers sound amazing! I see where you get your class, style and drive.
-
P.S. keep doing whatever it is you’re doing at your shoots. You look fantastic.

I love accessories or props in a photo that reveal something about the person. Whether it’s your pug, blingy jewelry (yes, blingy!) or a flower hair accessory, it really tells a small story outside of the picture. I also think it’s helpful to have a friend or loved one with you to help draw out natural emotions. I recently took pictures of my friend and her boyfriend around UVa Grounds (that’s our term for campus). The priceless emotions I captured wouldn’t have been possible without her boyfriend at tow. It might help you relax if you’re nervous the day of the shoot.
Can’t wait to see them, cheers!

Smashbox Make-up (made for photo shoots). Especially their make-up primer!

Your skin looks flawless in the engagement & wedding pics so I would do the same thing for these pics!
If you are looking for something new, Makeup Forever makes a high def foundation that gives one flawless skin for photographs. I would go to sephora and try on a couple shades til you match your skin tone perfectly.
I think one of the best parts of your photos, especially the engagement ones, are the little details. I’m sure your photog will take care of props and such but I would continue to wear patterns and accessorize as you have in the past!
Good luck, I can’t wait to see the final outcomes!

My mom was a model in Paris in the 50′s – though modeling styles have changed – these tips she passed on to me are timeless:
Make sure to smile with your eyes – not just your lips. Project! Project!
Neck tall and chin up and out !
Look like you have a naughty secret (I love that one!)Bonne chance !

katie,
i had a portrait photography business for 20 years (black & white, handtinting, darkroom..all of the old fashioned stuff)…i found that my and my clients’ best pics came when we were just talking…i would always engage them in conversation during the shoot and just burn a lot of film with no time limit.
and, if you stop thinking about the shoot and just show up, you’ll do great!
good luck, although, you don’t need it cause you’re beautiful and will be an interesting subject for your photographer.

Smashbox Halo powder. It makes your skin glow i in photos. Totally worth the expense. Don’t believe me? see the proof here http://www.flickr.com/photos/snoopy126/3376329191
And of course, the best light is natural light.

I love the pics with lots of neutral tones like greys and blacks, but then just a touch of color- you looked awesome with your wedding lipstick in coral, and also in the pics with the purple heather in the background. Make sure to be quirky instead of conventional- let your sparkle come through! Think about Mr. Armour while you are being photographed! (Thanks for the Christmas package, and Anna LOVES her kindle!)

And a half set of fake lashes (or cut a full set in half) will make eyes pop even if you skip eyeshadow.

There’s a lot of great advice here, mine is have a shot of something….loosens up the nerves.

I love Mac Studio Tech foundation. It photographs really well, I wore it on our wedding day.
And you need no luck! xo
