Atlanta’s Best Pieces

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

Picture 64

This week I really want to move to Atlanta.  Last week it was D.C. and the week before that it was back to Manhattan, but today I’ve returned to my southern belle fantasies.  One place I’ve always longed to visit in Atlanta’s Buckhead neighborhood is the charming shop Pieces.  Their fun mix of antique, vintage and contemporary  furniture and home accessories won me over long ago though I’ve yet to visit in person.   The owner, Lee Kleinhelter, clearly has an incredible eye for design and her fantastic use of color continually blows me away.  Above, a few current favorites from the Pieces inventory.  I’m fairly certain I need that French birdcage…  I hope we move to Georgia come June!

I’m in love with these French ruffled towels by Two Girls in Avignon.  They’re so girly and fabulous—I mean really, that Indienne print at top is to die for.  Plus I adore Avignon.  I went there with my French host family when I studied abroad in Provence and saw this spectacular new wave ballet at night inside the courtyard of the Palais de Papes.  It was wild—all the ballerinas somehow ended up naked on stage by the end of the show.  I love the French.  Anyway, back to the towels—cute right?

I ♥ Calypso

Sometimes when I’m feeling nostalgic for Manhattan I find myself wandering over to the websites of my old haunts. The Calypso Home boutique in Soho was one of my all favorites and their online shop helps to satisfy my longing.  Above, some of my favorite items.  Leopard linen napkins and a Katie-Armour-purple frame, need I say more?

ELLEDECOR-AprilCover

Thought you all might appreciate a sneak peek of the stunning April Elle Decor cover—is it not gorgeous?  I’m drooling over the colors in that rug, the orange striped cushion, and the three stacked paintings on the back wall.  Swoon!  The issue will feature Oscar de la Renta’s new line of fabrics, the 12 things Nate Berkus “can’t live without” and a tour of the Buenos Aires abode of polo player Nacho Figueras.  If his home is half as handsome as he is we’re in for a treat!  The issue hits newstands on March 16th—I can’t wait!

I want Jenna Lyons’ desk.  It’s watermelon.  I mean really, does it even get any more fabulous then that?  I’ve been thinking about it all week and then, yesterday, I stumbled upon some random (and very cool) office with the very same desk (take two).  It’s a sign, don’t you think?  I did some research and it’s called the Strut Table and can be used for dining too (take three).  I’m in l-o-v-e.

P.S. Adore how Jenna paired it with an Eames Management chair and Beni Ourain rug!  The girl has serious style.

Vintage Luggage

vintage suitcases magazine photo

The Patrick Cline photo accompanying today’s quote got me thinking about just how much I adore vintage luggage.  While I’m not a big fan of carrying it (I’m a roller, carry-on type of gal), stacked vintage suitcases can be repurposed to make the sweetest side tables.  I especially love them in homes with a country garden vibe or, on the opposite end of the spectrum, as a dash of vintage in a very clean lined, modern interior.  I have two I picked up at the Chelsea Flea market in Manhattan that serve as coffee table in our apartment.  One is monogrammed “DMB.”  I like to believe it belonged to Mr. Matthews in a past life…

Timeless Blooms

Picture 40

Picture 39

Would you believe me if I told you none of these stunning bouquets would ever wilt?  It’s true!  Now I’m a fan of fresh blooms, don’t get me wrong, but sometimes when a client simply doesn’t have the time required to constantly purchase and nurture fresh flowers you need to look into other options.  That’s where Diane James Home comes in.  Her faux floral arrangements are so believably real in appearance they are the go-to source for top designers such as Michael Smith, Celerie Kemble, Mario Buatta, and many more.  Diane studied floral techniques under Lady Pulbrook, “the doyenne of English design,” while living in Europe and eventually began using faux flowers in the 1990’s as a solution for clients’ vacation homes.  Brilliant right?  For a black thumb like myself, it’s true love.

Oh and be sure to check out The Buzz, the Diane James Home blog written by one of her lovely twin daughters, Carolyn.  It’s a treasure trove of info about floral and decorating history—one of my daily reads!

You all left amazing suggetions yesterday for my new home office—I can’t thank you enough!  I had to share one in particular, however, that I think will make your heart flutter.  The darling Sarah of Going Star Fishing recommended this vintage inspired rolodex by Lovely Design. It’s available in walnut or mahogany and is entirely hand-crafted!  I mean really—how cute are the recycled papers that go inside?  I’m absolutely smitten.  Thank you Sarah!

Picture 21

Big news—I’ve decided to take the leap (after 75 sales in two weeks—I love you guys!!!) and pursue my Katie Armour Home venture full time.  I’ll finally be able to upload all my inventory!  I have so much planned I can hardly sit still.  One of my first orders of business, however, will be to prepare a proper home office.  I desperately need a new chair, the current dining chair I use (tisk, tisk) is beginning to take a serious toll on my back.  Does anyone have a suggestion for a chic, comfortable chair that won’t break the bank?  I’m currently loving this one from Crate & Barrel (until I can afford the Eames that surely inspired it).  Some other items I’m lusting after for my dream office:

WestElmDesk

This classic white lacquered Parsons desk by West Elm.

Picture 44Happy Monday everyone!  Today I’m thrilled to introduce to you Tamara Kaye-Honey of House of Honey interiors.  Though based out of Los Angeles, the inspiring designer is in fact a native of Hailfax, Nova Scotia (a beautiful corner of the earth I’ve long hoped to visit!).  Upon graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, Tamara worked as a clothing buyer for Bergdorf Goodman before eventually relocating to Los Angeles where her love affair with interiors took root.  The second I laid eyes on Tamara’s glamourous website I knew she was a fellow Neo-Traditionalist.  Her eclectic style artfully combines new and old, color and glamour—right up my alley!  Enough of me though, I’ll let Tamara speak for herself… Oh and prepare yourself because not only are her interiors stunning, her children are a-d-o-r-a-b-l-e.

HHlogo_final_boxb[2]

Five words used to describe yourself.

Straightforward / driven / silly / creative / unconventional [Above, the ultra glamorous House of Honey logo.]

What inspires you creatively?

I am inspired by design and architecture from both the past and present.

The idea of customizing, re-working and reinventing, propels my designs. I try to create environments and pieces that are fresh and modern, yet retain a timeless quality. And of course my children inspire me everyday.

Picture 35Who are/were your design mentors?

My best friend’s mum in high school was the founder and president of BB Bargoon’s (Canada’s leading home furnishing’s and fabric mega store at the time). Bonnie Bickel was small but mighty and ran her enterprise with such confidence and stride. She really was inspirational both creatively and from a business standpoint. Now, as a mother of two, I am inspired by women who can balance their own business and raise children. And last but not least, my husband for having the courage, talent and drive to start his own commercial production company.

What is your personal design aesthetic?

playful, modern, unexpected and always unique.

Picture 50What propelled you to start your own company?

I have always known I wanted to do something creative. I started in fashion and moved to interiors, which I love but am very excited to be taking it to the next level and am in the process of opening a retail shop and design studio. I will offer a curated selection of home furnishings and decorative accessories. Customers can browse ‘ House Of Honey’, read a design book, buy a candle- hopefully be inspired and decide to hire me to redesign their home, or at least to purchase a custom chair! The House of Honey concept is based on the idea of accessible design and a lifestyle that is full of personality, humor and of course, style. House Of Honey will give clients the access to great new and vintage fabrics and wallpapers and allow them to be part of the design process in a non-intimidating fun manner that is personal to them.

Most glamorous part of owning your own company?

Being my own boss. I never worked well for other people; I think I always thought I was in charge.

Picture 37Least glamorous part of owning your own company?

Being my own boss.

Best business advice you’ve been given?

My friend and business startup expert Nada Jones recently published the book ‘16 Weeks to Your Dream Business: A Weekly Planner for Entrepreneurial Women”. It is a must read for anyone trying to start or grow a business.

Picture 33

Creative businesswoman you admire?

Dorothy Draper for having the courage to enter what was a male dominated Industry (she had no formal training) and for her innovative bold unique designs that transformed American decorating. Sister Parish for encouraging spaces to be designed for enjoyment and to mix patterns up, not matchie-matchie. Diane von Fürstenberg for having the strength and courage to reinvent her business when things got really tough and went on to launch the Infamous wrap dress.

What keeps your organized and on task?

My husband for his technical know how (I am a real luddite), my best friend Traci for all she does and finally my paper daytimer which I would be lost without.

Picture 49Moment you knew you’d “made it”?

Question may be premature!

Describe your typical workday.

No day is typical which I love. What is consistent is lots of coffee in the am/ driving kids to and from school/ some sort of design based shopping, client interaction and creative thinking/designing.

Picture 50Your dream project?

A boutique hotel in Pasadena

What goals do you have for your business in the future?

My goal is to expand my signature style- The New Vintage. By mixing old and new with whimsical and usual pieces/patterns/shapes and colors the result is a fresh, playful and modern approach to design. [Below, Tamara's ridiculously adorable children---oh my goodness!]

Picture 42

Advice to other budding creative entrepreneurs?

Be true to yourself and just go for it. You will regret it if you don’t.

Picture 50Be sure to stop in tomorrow to see Tamara’s Plucky Pioneer cheat sheet — her top picks for fashion, film, and more!  Thank you Tamara!

My latest Etsy obsession is the pillow cover shop Be Still.  It’s pieces are ridiculously chic and so simply styled—it was love at first sight.  I always have trouble finding great lumbar pillows and Be Still’s are not only gorgeous, but for $30 – $60 they’re an absolute steal!  Bookmarked!

178 Square Feet

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

33120394.JPG

I’m all about decorating on a budget and making the most of small spaces and this dashing young decorator, Zach Motl of Robert Courturier & Associates, may just be my decorating soul mate.  A former intern for Miles Redd, Zach rents the 178 square foot studio you see below for $944 a month in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn.  Over the last three years he has transformed the small space into a maximalist’s paradise, trumpeting what the New York Times calls the new “more is more” aesthetic.  Zach chipped off all the old bathroom tiling himself (”that’s when the love affair with my downstairs neighbor began,” he told the Times sarcastically) and painted the walls that handsome midnight blue.  My favorite detail?  The brass pineapples just like the one I gave away in last week’s Katie Armour Home contest!  Kindred spirits for certain.  Congrats to Mr. Motl, clearly this young Neo-Trad has found his calling.  Read the full article HERE.

The fantastic and hilarious Jenny at My Favorite and My Best posted what is very possibly MY favorite home of all time yesterday—I nearly wept it’s so beautiful!  The “double fronted period country house” is named Scotts Float and is available for rent through Beach Studios.   Located in East Sussex in southeast England,  it comes complete with the absolute sweetest, unruly English garden—something I’ve always dreamed of!  The interior is so simple and fresh, historic yet relevant—I just adore every inch of it.  Needless to say, this place is officially on top of my dream home list.  Someday, my pretty little Scotts Float, I’m going to buy you and love you and decorate you and call you my own…I can feel it in my bones.

I was trying to think of something to post about on this lovely Friday morning and felt inspired by this Greek themed ice bucket in my shop.  I just LOVE the classical key design—it reminds me of well, Greece, and who doesn’t love a sunny island or two?  Below, some of my favorite Greek Key designs from around the web.  Happy Friday everyone!
