John (the boyfriend) and I have been going to lots of flea markets lately (an attempt to fill the void in my life now that I’ve left Manhattan and can’t be in Chelsea every Sunday morning). I’ve been pleased to find things are far cheaper down south. After sifting through a fair amount of junk I’ve found some real bargains! The glass pineapple vase above cost only pennies and the 1970 Second Edition hardcover copy of Joan Didion’s (my idol!) Play It As It Lays was such a find. The stools were both in pretty bad shape (think dusty eighties upholstery), but they had such pretty lines and good construction so I snatched them up. All I had to do was pull out a can of spray paint and some Brunschwig & Fils fabric remnants and voila! I’m a very happy girl.

My boyfriend and I came across this home in the New York Times and are so inspired! Brooklyn couple Christina Salway and John Moskowitz bought the home in the Catskills for a mere $95,000 and did all the renovating themselves (with the exception of the roof). The 700-square-foot cottage includes a garage that was converted into a Living Room using salvaged windows and glass-paned doors. Judging by the chicness of the finished product, it’s no surprise that Ms. Salway is an interior designer. Some of my favorite little touches were the retro appliances for the kitchen and the mis-matched vintage dining chairs all painted white. Most impressive of all is that the resourceful couple found most of the home’s furnishings and artwork at flea markets, on Craigslist and from trash cans! We love it.

I don’t know about you, but I’m so pleased with the makeover Country Living magazine has undergone in recent months. With the tragic foldings of House & Garden and then Domino magazine, Country Living seems to have taken it upon themselves to spruce their image up a bit. Here at the NEO-traditionalist we couldn’t be more pleased. We are seriously lacking in chic shelter magazines these days and we thank Country Living for having stepped up to plate. All the images in this post are taken from their website—just a little taste of all they have to offer. Happy Fourth of July everyone!
